MARCH SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: JARED

How long have you been a member at NCF?

I have been a member at NCF since August of 2015...so basically a year and a half.

Which class do you usually attend?

I attend usually everyday (unless I have grad school) in the evenings (usually at 5.) I attend  Gymnastics, Endurance, comp team, Oly, and Saturday partner classes as well.

How did you find NCF?

My best friend/college roommate, Mitch Stevenson. He came home and told me this thing about CrossFit. I gave him the hardest time about it. I said, I could do the same thing going to the gym. I also told him that he was addicted to it. Man, was I wrong? I can't imagine not going as often as I do. Thanks, Mitch! I knew I should've trusted you. 🙂

What is your athletic/fitness background?

I played soccer all the way through high school. I played baseball and basketball until middle school. Then I found my other love for running. So then...besides soccer, I also got into cross country and track.

What is your most challenging move in Crossfit?

Oh man...overhead squats for sure! The combination of burpees and thrusters is challenging as well...so there's that.

What is your favorite Crossfit move?

Wall balls, squat cleans or anything endurance. I know the majority of you think I'm probably crazy.

What is your favorite thing about NCF?

I would have to say the community and friendships that I have made here. I know that I can go to NCF after work and have genuine conversations. I know that I will walk into the box and be pushed to my limits from coaches and friends. This is what I love about our community. We hold each other accountable, push each other, and praise one another. I leave feeling more refreshed then when I walked in.

What is your biggest accomplishment since starting Crossfit?

Definitely getting my ring muscle up within the past month. I never in a million years would have thought I would get one of those. I still can't believe it.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness?

CrossFit has made me focus on my health and nutrition more than ever before. I have never been able to gain muscle before coming here. It still is a work in progress, but I have definitely seen a difference in my physique and the PRs I keep accomplishing. I am also consistent with my workouts. Going to a gym before, there was no accountability, but here, I feel there is accountability and I appreciate that.

Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve through CrossFit?

I would love to just continue seeing a difference in the PRs, muscle mass, and flexibility. That's three, but what can I say? I'm a goal oriented person.

Hobbies/Interests outside of CrossFit?

I like to do anything in the water...swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, water parks...you name it. I also used to act and would like to someday get back into that. I also like going on walks, exploring new places in Portland, traveling to Disneyland as much as I can, and hanging out with friends/family!

Any advice for new members?

Meet people, get connected, have those people keep you accountable, challenge yourself, don't give up on yourself, and most of all...have fun!

Any additional thoughts/shout outs/comments:

Thanks to all the coaching staff for pushing me to my limits, all my friends that constantly support me and put up with my sass/dish it back and to my bro-friend, Brian who constantly challenges me...and somehow puts up with being my partner in many partner WODs.
