Age: 34

How long have you been coming to NCF? 4 months.

Why did you join CrossFit? I really can’t tell you why I chose NCF. I was ready to work hard and I was ready to make a change. I think I literally woke up one summer morning and told my husband, “I am going to try Crossfit.” I am pretty sure he thought I was crazy.

How has CrossFit changed your life? Crossfit has changed my life in a major way. I have met so many amazing people who inspire me and encourage me every day. I have realized that I can do much more than I ever thought possible.

What is your most challenging move in CrossFit? I would say that ring work and bar work would be my most challenging.

What is your favorite CrossFit move? Clean and jerk. For sure, end of story.

What are your future goals in CrossFit?  I would love to be able to compete someday. In the meantime, my goal is to keep doing what I’m doing: working hard, perfecting my technique, learning new lifts, and making new gains.

What’s your favorite thing about Newberg CrossFit?  The people! When I started 101 I didn’t know anyone and now I feel like I know everyone. At first I was so surprised at the support that was given to others. But now I know it isn’t about how much you can lift or how fast you can finish a workout. It’s about celebrating your neighbors PR or simply finishing the workout together.

What was your reaction when you were told that you’d been chosen as our Spotlight Athlete? Surprised. Since I have only been at the gym for four months, I didn’t see this coming.  I told him, “Thank you” and he said not to thank him and that I had earned it. Plus I had had a really bad day. The old me would have made every excuse not to go to the gym but instead I knew that going to NCF would make my day better. My new motto is that Crossfit makes the bad days better and the good days awesome.

What are a few things people may not know about you?  I can play the spoons. I can do the splits. I lived in Japan for two years while teaching English at a middle school. I hate dirty dishes in the sink. My husband and I are high school sweethearts. And the best for last, I can burp the ABCs.

“Jenny has such a great spirit about her. She always gives every workout her everything. She’s fun! And brings great energy into this community. I’m excited to be a part of her journey.”

“Jenny is a really fun athlete to coach. She’s positive, upbeat, and is always willing to try something new. Over the past several months she’s quietly gotten better and better. She squats below parallel now and beautifully, I might add. She deadlifts heavy things, does handstands and all with a smile on her face. That’s a pretty awesome deal, as a coach, to have someone that you know is going to come to class, work hard, and make your day better just by being around them. You can’t ask for more than that.”
-Doug Hildreth

Is there anything else you’d like to say?  To ALL the NCF coaches. Thank you for making me feel like I can do anything. Thank you for making every exercise work for ME. I never show up to the box worried about whether or not I can do the WOD. The NCF coaches always make sure that I can.

Congratulations Jenny on being our December Spotlight Athlete.
