How long have you been coming to NCF? Three and half years
Why did you join CrossFit? After my oldest daughter was six months old I trained for a triathlon in order to shed my pregnancy pounds. The cardio was great, but only after a certain point. I was still carrying around some baby weight when I found out I was pregnant with baby #2. Nine months after she was born I was ready to get serious about dropping the pregnancy pounds and my husband suggested CrossFit. I convinced my friend to try it out with me and after our first week we were hooked.
How has CrossFit changed your life? I feel better, I eat better, I’m stronger, I have more energy, I’m more confident, and I’ve got the courage to start wearing skinny jeans.
What is your most challenging move in CrossFit? Thrusters. I get winded very easily when doing them and it’s hard for me to settle into the movement.
What is your favorite CrossFit move? I’m a cross country running coach, so I definitely enjoy the running. I also enjoy doing double-unders, box jumps, rope climbs AND I love the rush after completing a technically-perfect snatch.
What are your future goals in CrossFit? I would love to do a Crossfit competition with my husband as my partner. I really want to be able to do a muscle up and continuous/unbroken toes to bar. But my ultimate goal is maintaining my quality of life, being active with my children as I get older, and inspiring a lifelong love of exercise and fitness in my daughters.
What’s your favorite thing about Newberg CrossFit? Hands down, the community!
What was your reaction when Doug told you that you’d been chosen as our Spotlight Athlete? I was pretty surprised, then secretly felt a little uneasy for being singled out. But soon after that, I felt nothing but gratitude, and ultimately I’m honored.
What are a few things people may not know about you? I was a Surface Warfare Officer in the Navy and a high school math teacher at NHS before becoming a stay-at-home mom. Oh, and I’m a Puerto Rican from Alaska.
Sonya has been with us, almost. from the very beginning. She has made so many improvements over the last 3 1/2 years. She has taken her time and remained injury free. And all that time and effort has paid off. I loved watching her workout while she was pregnant. She never slowed down. I absolutely love her and her daughters. She sets a great example for her girls.
Sonya is exactly what CrossFit is about. A general inclusive level of fitness that continues to improve as the months and years go by just by showing up and being consistent. She just shows up, does the WOD for the day and works hard.
When she began she couldn’t do pull-ups or RX workouts. She trained through pregnancy and modified when she needed to. Now she is an absolute badass. She can perform any movement we ask her body to do in the gym and she does it well. That is what we want to build in every athlete; consistent growth over time.
Is there anything else you’d like to say? I’m so thankful that Newberg CrossFit is a kid-friendly environment. I’m even more thankful to Doug and Abby for holding my youngest, while they coached, for the first year of her life so that I could work out.
Congratulations Sonya on being our Spotlight Athlete.
